Our spinal cord is about 18 inches long that extends from the base of the brain to near the waist. A spinal injury is a damage to the spinal cord. It is also known as spinal cord injury (SCI). This causes temporary or permanent changes into the functionality of the Spinal cord. The severity depends on the part of the spinal cord where injury happens. Tetraplegia is caused due to injury to the spinal cord in the cervical (neck) region. Paraplegia is caused due to injuries into the spinal cord in the thoracic or lumbar areas, resulting in paralysis of legs and lower parts of the body. Depending on the severity, there is complete spinal cord injury (SCI) and Incomplete spinal cord injury (Incomplete SCI). One can see the symptoms like extreme pain the neck region, partial or complete loss of the control of any part of the body, unusual lumps on the head or spine and difficulty in walking and balancing.
